Moreover I came across this interesting (but lengthy) video on the Dunning-Kruger Effect. Essentially this claims that non-professionals tend to overestimate their proficiency level. The video is not specifically focused on language proficiency, but since it is applicable to all knowledge fields, it evidently also holds for language learning and self-evaluated proficiency.
